A Discourse Concerning the Inimical Operation of the Human Spirit
July 26, 2005 on 4:22 pm | In Happenings | No CommentsOur loyal agglomeration:
We have received a new decree from the head office. Henceforth, each employee will be required to have a wind-up key surgically attached to his/her/its spine, the purpose of this being to regulate the following: muscular reflex-arc work-flow rhythms; body temperature fluctuations; electrical irruptions within the nervous system; the overall mechanical operation of the spirit; and all excess overflow of desire into non-work-related areas.
Not since the invention of the microsecond has there been a more substantial leap forward into the future of work-flow regulation. We hope that you are as excited about this as we are.
Please report to the nearest surgical retrofitting station at your earliest convenience.

July 23, 2005 on 6:07 pm | In Happenings | No CommentsAround about the time you realize there was something missing all along it’s always already too late and then you gotta do what you can to shore up the damage that was there the whole time only you just now see it but whatever way you fix it it still don’t seem just right ’cause there’s always that something that you’re not sure just quite what exactly it is but it’s staring you in the face, maybe laughing at you, maybe just winking, making its presence known through those subtle malfunctions of everyday life: the power goes out and your alarm clock doesn’t wake you in time for work; the timing belt in your car makes funny noises; there’s a stray cat at your door; you leave the windows open when it rains; you get someone’s name wrong; you pull a muscle in your neck; some Republican leader claims that Karl Rove is the victim of a smear campaign; you forget an essential detail and have to redo something; a light bulb goes out; there are ants in your kitchen; all your favorite shirts are getting threadbare; etc, etc…
What to fill this lacuna with?
10 pm’s:
Wednesday, July 20, Bickett Gallery: Out of Season
Steve Burnett on theremin and possible other noisemaking devices (http://www.neverwhere.org/~steve/). Brian Donohoe on electronic drums and loopers and pedals and junk (he’s the new drummer for Strange). Adrian Likins on chapman stick (Phasmatodea). Meself on horns/guit.

Thursday, July 28, Local 506, Chapel Hill, Free Show: Kolyma, Savage Knights, The Whole World Laughing.
You no doubt already have Kolyma permanently impressed on your nervous system.
Savage Knights is latest moniker for the now quintet formation of Mike Isenberg on drums, John Hubbard (Black Castle) on tenor sax, Peter Lamb (Countdown Quartet) on tenor sax, Phil Martelli (Daddy, Dude Garden, Volcanos) on electric bass, and Crowmeat Bob on guitar, alto sax and bass clarinet.
The Whole World Laughing is the lovely and talented duo of Dave Cantwell (Razzle, CG & J) and Scotty Irving (Clang Quartet, Geezer Lake, Bunker).
August 3: Plausible Denial
That’d be myself and Tom Whitelock (guitar). We will have a drummer joining us for this one. Not sure who yet.

July 12, 2005 on 3:55 pm | In Happenings | No CommentsFriends, associates, believers:
The hour has finally arrived when we can set aside all pretence and burst from our civilized shells with true primal eruptions. The veil lifted, the circle broken, the meager thread of polite everydayness snapped.
Attached is a coupon book for products that will unmitigate the dampened flows of spiritual effluvium. Offer expires December 21, 2012.
All shows at Bickett Gallery, Wednesday nights, 10 pm.

August 3: Plausible Denial
I reckon this name works well enough for some of the various contingent groupings including myself and Tom Whitelock (guitar). We will have a drummer joining us for this one. Not sure who yet.
Keep your unconscious archetypal seepage to a minimum, for the sake of those trying to sleepwalk.

July 7, 2005 on 10:05 am | In Happenings | No Commentsby all the jack-jiminy angels in heaven’n'hell, git yer lopsided countenances on out to these great hap’nin’s in yer neighborhood over the next coupla work-week turnarounds. And don’t say I never tipped you off to nothin, ya lousy fearloadin’ kneebiters.
Friday, July 8: Percolator Lounge (percolatorlounge.com), Raleigh, 7 pm: Razor Wire Safety Net.
Join Brian Donohoe (Strange, Shadow of a Great Name), Christopher Thurston (Odd International, The Numen, Defenestrator) and myselves for some free jazz. (’They call it “free” jazz ’cause no one would ever wanna pay for that crap.’ — I overheard a clever fellow say that once.)
Sunday, July 10, WXYC (89.3 FM), 2-3 pm: Broken Music
You don’t even need to leave your house for this one if you live in Chapel Hill or can stream audio over the world wide apparatus of electronic exchange. Your humble narrator will be ‘hosting’ a radio show for all you aural ‘parasites’ out there. This will be my first radio shew ever so I hope you will call in and tell me all about how what I play is a bunch of crap and how I couldn’t host a radio show even if I had Edgar Bergen’s voice comin out of my mouth. The show will feature some ‘classics’ of broken music. Mostly personal classics, ’cause that’s how I roll, motherfucker.
Immediately prior to this show (at 1 pm) is Hell or Highwater with host Katie Knight, who I believe will be featuring early latin music from the Southern Folklife Collection, including the earliest ‘known’ recording of a mariachi number, from 1908. Tune in to that as well.
Wednesday, July 13, Bickett Gallery, 10 pm: Beatific Pheromone
Featuring Steve Backus from Greenville on theremin (who got second place at the recent Chapel Hill theremin contest), Bodhi on tenor and baritone saxes and Bongo John on drums. I heard a recording of these last two guys together and it sounded pretty righteous. Myself will play horns and guitar. Possible other guests.
Wednesday, July 20, Bickett Gallery, 10 pm: Stark Joy
Brian Donohoe again on drums. Steve Burnett (http://www.neverwhere.org/~steve/) on theremin and other electro-items, probably chapman stick. Slowfeet Bob on horns and guit. Possible other guests.
Bee seeing you.
