del amore della morte
December 27, 2005 on 10:22 am | In Happenings | No CommentsDerek Bailey was one of those motherfuckers who make it impossible for anyone else to even contemplate the enormous task of taking guitarhood upon oneselves. But we will go on in our paltry ways, comfortable in the cool air of his shadow, if not always worthy to dwell there.
Wednesday, December 28, Kings, 10 pm, donation optional: Razor Wire Safety Net + guests.
RazorNet is Christopher Thurston on basses, Brian Donohoe on drums, an meself on horns and guitar. We’ll likely be joined by Peter Lamb on tenor sax, Julian Sparacino on reeds, possible other guests.
Saturday, December 31, Kings, 11 pm: Dexter Romweber and the New Romans.
Good old-fashioned rock and roll with Dex’s big band. There is no more proper way to bring in the new year. And remember, as of December 21, we’ve only got seven left. Live now.
Wednesday, January 4, Kings: Purity and Danger.
Dance + music. With dancers Renay Aumiller, Cara Clark, and a third whose name I haven’t got yet. Musicians Chris Eubank - cello; Rick Lassiter - double bass; Claire Hollins - violin; Christopher Thurston - double bass; Mortecaw Bob - bass clarinet; probably others. This performance will be entirely unamplified, so keep your ears open.
Tuesday, January 10, Kings, 9 pm: Fight the Bull and “Big Time”.
I’ll be showing the classic Tom Waits concert video “Big Time” at 9 pm. Then this mighty fine ultramod jazz trio from Richmond, Fight the Bull, will be playing.

may the play of forces be with you
December 20, 2005 on 1:10 pm | In Happenings | 1 CommentHow to decide between the exuberant, polyvocal proliferation of language in Joyce and the strangulated dessication of it in Artaud? The positivist in us enjoys the play of words, the cryptographic head games and of course the unabashed licentiousness of the Irishman. But the realist, and also the musician, in us recognizes the need to excoriate meaning from the lexicon by whatever violent means available. We are Cagey enough to know the subtleties involved, but are we Keiji enough to truly corrupt the sonic flux?
So when you hear a playful quotation of Duke Ellington followed by a succession of cragged “shards of sound” this just may be the diverging tendencies coming to terms with each other.
This has been a message from the United Way Out Campaign.
Wednesday, December 21, Kings Barcade, 10:30, donation optional: Apartments for the Dead.
You have oft heard it spake that the bees are fragments of souls from the land of the dead seeking vengeance for wrongs incurred in previous incarnations. We will build spiralling hexagons like threads of DNA for them to abide in those limbic regions by invoking molecular vibratory forces in alternating rhythmic conjunction and disjunction.
Brian Donohoe (Strange) - drums & efx, Randy Pelosi - guitar, Neil Vendrick (Another Tombstone Dream) - samplicity, Mortecaw Bob - guitar, alto sax.
Thursday, December 22, MarVell Building (119 W Main St), Durham, 10 pm, like 4 bucks: Kolyma, Savage Nites, Pro-L, Nimbus.
Now often paired together when travelling abroad, Savage Knight and his coy mistress Kolyma will burden MarVell with their deserts of vast eternity. We will likely play before Nimbus and Pro-L, both, I believe, of the hiphop variety.

I feel pity for those who will not be there.

Last out of the Bunhouse…
December 14, 2005 on 7:58 am | In Happenings | No CommentsFor whomb is the bunhouse fun? For lubbers, perhaps.
From whinch duality do-all we expule oursalves in our behindleavings of the merry twombs of pre-afterlife? That qwhimsical aperture giving us wide berth into the excoriating pleasures and puerile pains of this mortal slinky.
Here to dauble in peristaltic pursuances, fore-ever-after spectaculating on whither or nilly a purpose will manifest itself and willy or nither there’s evidence of a moronic design, much less an entelechent one. All the whorl with a fine dusting of plunky paleologisms. And awink and anod for thems what’s got a keening and cunning sense of the scortatory linguistickle arts.
Wednesday, December 14, Kings Barcade, 10 pm: Savage Knights.
Don’t miss it.
Friday, December 16, Greenville house party, 9 pm: Savage Knights and Kolyma and a bunch of other bands.
I know there’s at least one entity receiving this e-list in olde Greenville. Don’t know the location of the party or anything yet, but e-mail me if you wanna know and I’ll find out.
Wednesday, December 21, Kings, 10 pm: Apartments for the Dead.
Back by populist demand. Pelosi, Donohoe, and Pence.
Shatterday, December 31, Kings, 10 pm: Dexter Romweber and the New Romans.
Wherein we will resolve to better ourselves at some point in the future.
Dex & The NeoRomans are like “Band of the Month” in the Independent. I guess Wounded Soul must’ve been disqualified somehow.
They’ll play around 10-10:30. We’ll play around 11, and then another quick set after midnought. Then DJs to careen the night away.

December 7, 2005 on 9:25 am | In Happenings | 1 CommentDear Sir:
We regret to inform you that your tenure at the Company has come to an end. We feel that your potential within the limiting confines of our production facilities has reached its ultimate fruition and that we have become little more than burdens to each other. We would like to encourage you to view this as an opportunity rather than a setback, in that it will give you the freedom to explore more creative and beneficial possibilities. But the reality is that you’ll be sleeping on a grate in under a month.
We have notified the building coordinator and all of your belongings will be removed from the premises by 5 pm today. Please do not try to re-tread Company ground as we will have no choice but to shoot you.
Wednesday, Decemeber 7: Kings
No Health Jazz tonight. But do your Exercises anyway, because if you don’t keep up, we’re not going to wait around for you.
Wednesday, December 14, Kings, 10 pm, donation: Savage Nights
The Savage Knights have added Julian Sparacino from New Orleans to the line-up on reeds and flute. Mike on drums, Phil on bass, John on tenor sax, Robert on horns and guitar.

Pelosi in Prison
December 5, 2005 on 8:34 am | In Psych Warfare Transmissions | No CommentsHere’s a link to a page that has Randy Pelosi telling his insanely hilarious story about being put in prison for playing the saxophone on the street in New Orleans. With myself accompanying on bass clarinet. Listen now:
