Now and Again
April 19, 2007 on 12:34 pm | In Happenings | No CommentsYep.
Friday, April 20, Century, Charlotte, 9 pm: Project Bluebird with Megafaun and Locksmith Isidore.
Project Bluebird re-uniting for drumless jazz sounds — Brent Bagwell on reeds, Ron Brendle on contrabass, Carrie Shull on oboe/english horn, Ben Kennedy on cello/fiddle, Crowmeat Bob on reeds.
Raleigh folks Megafaun will be getting you in the mood. They’s Brad Cook, Joe Westerlund, and Phil Cook.
Locksmith Isidore (Chicago/New York) is Jason Stein (Bridge 61 w/Vandermark) on bass clarinet, Kevin Davis on cello, and Mike Pride on drums.
Century is here.

Wednesday, April 25, Bickett Gallery, 8 pm: A night of duets.
Go! with Pat Lawrence (contrabass, Greensboro) and Mahlon Hoard (saxes, Brooklyn) axed me to support them for a show on the 25th, so I’ll be securing a partner and Michael Thomas Jackson and Aaron Bachelder will be coming out from Winston-Salem as well.
I believe Pat’s and Mahlon’s set will involve video projections also.

Friday, April 27, Cat’s Cradle, Carrboro: The Nein with Negativland, Thomas Phillips, and Crystal Castles.
Electromadness and experimentation at SignalFest. Not sure of the order, but Negativland seems to be the headliner. Their show at the Art Center some years back was somethin else.

April 13, 2007 on 12:52 pm | In Happenings | 1 CommentIf the face were only capable of truth, it would be shielded more shamefully and morbidly than any other territory of the body from potential inspection. But the learned and civilized garments of facial identity are far more opaque than any pair of pants.
Saturday, April 14, 8 pm, Duke University - Nelson Music Room, Free: Graduate Composers’ Concert with the Nein.
We will be performing a composition by Ben Crawford.
There’ll also be performances of pieces by Dan Ruccia, George Lam, and Paul Leary (not the Paul Leary — at least I don’t think so…hmm. That History of Dogs record was kind of lame).
Nelson Hall is on Campus Drive just off of Main St on East Campus. It’s the first building on the right after you turn into Campus Dr.
The show is for free. Stop on by when you’re taking a break from the Duo-Fest or Full Frame.
Sunday, April 15, 9-10 pm, WXDU: Mystery Hour.
This week will be “Strange Enlightenment”. Turn on and tune in.

Friday, April 20, Century, Charlotte, NC, 8 pm: Project Bluebird with Megafaun and Locksmith Isidore.
Chamber jazz freaks Project Bluebird include Brent Bagwell on reeds, Ron Brendle on contrabass, Carrie Shull on oboe/english horn, Ben Kennedy on cello/fiddle, Crowmeat Bob on reeds.
Raleigh kids Megafaun are sorta sparse doom-roots music with harmonized vocals and electro-ambient excursions and some heavy rocking. With talented people Brad Cook, Joe Westerlund, and Phil Cook.
Locksmith Isidore is Jason Stein (Bridge 61 w/Vandermark) on bass clarinet, Kevin Davis on cello, and Mike Pride on drums.
Century is here.
Friday, April 27, Cat’s Cradle: The Nein with Negativland, Crystal Castles, and Thomas Phillips.
This is part of SignalFest.
Thomas played at one of the very first Death Jazzes over at Bickett Gallery with me. Reckon he’s back from Montreal for this show with his well-sculpted electroscapes.
Crystal Castles are sorta punk electronoisebeat w/vox from Toronto. myspace.com/crystalcastles
Negativland, well heck, you know who they are.
Bye now.

April 4, 2007 on 10:57 am | In Happenings | No CommentsIn these rapidly changing times one never knows where one stands, particularly if one is a juristic person with no official nation-state affiliation and one is not subject to any laws, national or international (except for such convenient laws which allow for juristic personhood, with particular personal thanks to the unequivocal 1886 Supreme Court ruling in Santa Clara County vs. the Southern Pacific Railroad). In an effort to be a global leader of the world of tomorrow, we at Retroactive Dynamics, Inc., have established a global extranational governing body whose mission is everlasting peace throughout the known world, the elite members of which have been culled from our own board of directors and our affiliates at the Thomas Carlyle Group, General Dynamics, Lockheed-Martin, Bell Helicopter, Boeing, Science Applications International Corporation, and IG Farben). Remember, your future will rest easy in the hands of the coming Empire, and Retroactive Dynamics, Inc., will be a leading citizen thereof.
Tonight, Wednesday, April 4, Nightlight, Chapel Hill: Hem of His Garment with Jack Rose and Gowns.
Not sure about the order.
Hem of His Garment begin their tour of the Research Triangle. Three nights of big drone. Maxi-minimalism. Non-stop for 72 hours. Well, no, okay, not really. Maybe someday.
Jack Rose - experi-raga acoutic guitar master. www.vhfrecords.com/jackrose/
Gowns - moody psych songs with lots of strange, washed out improvising. Like if the Flaming Lips huffed model cement and saw through the veil of reality or something. Not that Flaming Lips haven’t seen through the veil of reality, mind you… http://music.calarts.edu/~ebuchla/gowns/
